Craft Type: Madur or mat is woven from a reed called Madurkathi.Mostly the artisans of Medinipur district of West Bengal are engaged in this craft. On 28-Mar-2018, Indian Patent Office granted the Govt of West Bengal a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag for madurkathi.Madur has been an integral part of Bengali society for ages.Earlier madurkathi mats were only used for bedding or sitting purpose only but now fashionable curtains, table mats and various other products are prepared with madurkathi.
Method: Madurkathi is cultivated in the marshy lands of Medinipur. The raw reeds are collected and using cotton thread the reeds are weaved in a simple bamboo framed loom.
Material and Colour: This mat / madurkathi or madur reeds are naturally found in maroon or black colour.
