This English morality play was written ca. 1470-1476. It includes piety, vulgarity, bawdiness, seriousness, and humor–and is one of the earliest plays to show evidence of being acted by professionals (they take up a collection halfway through the show). Mankind struggles against the temptations of Titivillus, a devil, and the roguery of New Guise, Nowadays, Nought, and Mischief, four profane rascals. His only help is the good priest Mercy, who shows him the way to salvation. The play is rendered in modern English, and permission to perform it is granted.
